How Much Does eBay Take From a $50 Sale? (2026)
Short answer: on a $50 item with no shipping charge and no sales tax, eBay takes $7.20, a 13.6% final value fee ($6.80) plus the $0.40 per-order fee, so you keep $42.80. Most real orders also include shipping and sales tax, and eBay charges its percentage on those too. A $50 item with $8 shipping and 8% tax costs you $8.92 in eBay fees. These are the rates for most categories if you don't have an eBay Store.
Below is the exact math, what changes the number, and a table for other prices. Every figure comes from our eBay fee calculator, which uses the rates on eBay's official seller fees page (checked October 24, 2026).
The two fees eBay charges on a $50 sale
For most categories, a seller without a Store pays two fees when an item sells:
- Final value fee: 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500, then 2.35% on any part above $7,500.
- Per-order fee: $0.30 if the order total is $10 or less, $0.40 if it is over $10.
Listing is free for most sellers up to the monthly free-listing allowance, so insertion fees usually don't apply to a single $50 sale.
The detail most "eBay fee calculator" answers skip is what "total amount of the sale" means. eBay defines it as the item price plus shipping, handling and the sales tax the buyer pays. eBay collects and remits the tax for you, but it still charges its 13.6% on it. eBay's own help page walks through an $85.60 order and arrives at $12.04 (13.6% of $85.60 plus $0.40), and that is the same formula we use.
Example 1: a plain $50 sale
This is the number most people mean: $50 item, free shipping you've priced in, and (to keep it simple) no sales tax.
| Item price | $50.00 |
| Final value fee | −$6.80 |
| Per-order fee | −$0.40 |
| Total eBay fees | −$7.20 |
| Payout from eBay | $42.80 |
$6.80 + $0.40 = $7.20, or 14.4% of the sale. You keep $42.80 before the cost of the item and the label.
Example 2: a $50 sale with shipping and sales tax
Now the realistic version: the buyer pays $50 for the item, $8 for shipping, and 8% sales tax. The total the buyer pays is $62.64, and the 13.6% applies to all of it.
| Item price | $50.00 |
| Shipping paid by buyer | $8.00 |
| Buyer sales tax (8%, remitted by eBay) | $4.64 |
| Final value fee | −$8.52 |
| Per-order fee | −$0.40 |
| Total eBay fees | −$8.92 |
| Payout from eBay | $49.08 |
| Item cost | −$12.00 |
| Your shipping label | −$7.50 |
| Profit | $29.58 |
The final value fee rises from $6.80 to $8.52 because it is charged on $62.64 instead of $50. If you paid $12 for the item and $7.50 for the label, your actual profit is $29.58. That's the number that matters, and it's about $13 less than "$50 minus eBay's cut" suggests.
What eBay takes at other prices
Same assumptions as Example 1 (item price only, most categories, no Store, no ads):
| Sale price | eBay fees | You keep | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10 | $1.66 | $8.34 | 16.6% |
| $25 | $3.80 | $21.20 | 15.2% |
| $50 | $7.20 | $42.80 | 14.4% |
| $100 | $14.00 | $86.00 | 14.0% |
| $250 | $34.40 | $215.60 | 13.8% |
On cheap items the flat per-order fee makes up a bigger share of the sale, which is why a $10 sale loses 16.6% while a $250 sale loses 13.8%.
Five things that change what eBay takes
1. Sales tax. With 8% tax on a plain $50 sale, the fee goes from $7.20 to $7.74. The tax isn't your money, but eBay still takes 13.6% of it.
2. Shipping you charge. Every $1 of shipping you charge the buyer costs about 13.6¢ in fees. Some sellers raise the item price and offer "free" shipping instead. The fee works out about the same, but the listing often converts better.
3. Category. The 13.6% rate is for "most categories." On a $50 sale, eBay's exceptions work out like this:
| Category (no Store) | Final value fee | Total with $0.40 | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most categories | 13.6% → $6.80 | $7.20 | $42.80 |
| Books, Movies & Music | 15.3% → $7.65 | $8.05 | $41.95 |
| Trading cards | 13.25% → $6.63 | $7.03 | $42.97 |
| Guitars & basses | 6.7% → $3.35 | $3.75 | $46.25 |
Pick your category in the eBay calculator to apply it automatically.
4. Promoted Listings. An ad rate is charged on the same total sale amount. On the Example 2 order, a 5% Promoted Listings Standard rate adds $3.13, so your total eBay cost is $12.05.
5. eBay Store and seller performance. Store subscribers get lower final value fees in many categories, but they pay a monthly subscription. Sellers rated "below standard" pay a higher final value fee. Check your rate in Seller Hub if either applies to you.
Is eBay expensive compared with other apps?
Here's the same plain $50 sale on other platforms (item price only, US rates):
- Mercari: 10% selling fee → $5.00 (Mercari calculator)
- eBay: $7.20
- Poshmark: 20% → $10.00
eBay sits in the middle. It usually earns that cut with a much larger buyer base, especially for collectibles, parts and electronics. To see one sale ranked across all nine marketplaces, use the reseller fee comparison.
Track it, don't guess it
eBay deducts fees from each payout, so it's easy to lose track of what you actually made after fees, labels, ad spend and sourcing costs. If you sell regularly, our Profit Tracker spreadsheet logs every flip and calculates real profit per item, per platform and per month.
FAQ
How much does eBay take from a $50 sale?
For most categories without an eBay Store, eBay takes 13.6% of the total sale plus a $0.40 per-order fee. On a plain $50 sale that is $6.80 + $0.40 = $7.20, leaving you $42.80. With $8 shipping and 8% sales tax the fee is $8.92.
Does eBay take a percentage of shipping?
Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, including the shipping and handling the buyer pays, plus sales tax.
What is eBay's per-order fee in 2026?
$0.30 when the order total is $10 or less and $0.40 when it is over $10, on top of the percentage-based final value fee.
Do I pay eBay fees if the item doesn't sell?
Not final value fees. Those apply only when an item sells. Listing is free up to your monthly zero-insertion-fee allowance; beyond it, insertion fees apply.
Is eBay cheaper than Poshmark for a $50 item?
Yes, usually. On a plain $50 sale eBay takes about $7.20 and Poshmark takes $10.00 (20%). But on Poshmark the buyer pays the shipping label, so compare your full numbers in the comparison tool.
